[Equipment problem spotlight] Oil oxidation
Do you have an oil-related equipment issue you’re struggling to solve? This is your chance to get to the crux of the problem once and for all.
Welcome to our equipment problem spotlight blog, an open forum aimed at helping you get to the bottom of your oil-related equipment problems.
Our first post relates to an extremely common problem one of our new customers recently experienced – oil oxidation. Read on for the full details.
The customer in question had a large hydraulic tank and had decided they wanted to change the fluid after experiencing a severe drop in performance. Before changing it, they approached us to see if there were any alternative solutions they could adopt instead.
And this is how we helped them solve their problem.
We confirmed that the hydraulic fluid was very badly oxidised and there were deposits of sludge and varnish in the tank. Our specialists took the following course of action to clean the fluid so that it could continue to be used:
1. The first step was to stabilise the fluid in the tank and remove any deposits from the walls. We did this by adding a 5% solution of our 100 Oil Additive to the tank.
2. The next step was to filter out of the dirt particles to clean and improve the performance of the fluid.
3. We then implemented a quarterly oil analysis programme to monitor the health of the hydraulic fluid in the tank and gearbox oils used elsewhere in the production facility. For more details about oil cleanliness levels, read our blog ‘How clean does your oil need to be?’.
The client is extremely happy with the results and are confident that monitoring the condition of their lubricants will prevent the oil in their hydraulic tank from oxidising again.
While it may seem quicker and more straightforward to sort problems associated with lubricant degradation, such as oil oxidation, yourself, it could prove costly and time-consuming. Seeking specialist advice will ensure your problem(s) are solved first time around, with the right products and equipment to be able to address the issues quickly and easily.
